As I drive to the scene, the FM radio plays many episodes from the 20th anniversary of the earthquake. 20 years have passed since then. I remember waking up that morning in my bunk bed in the university dormitory and feeling nothing but helplessness. After graduating from university, I persistently decided to pursue a career in architecture, and after many ups and downs, I am now working in architecture. Completed in 1960, Osaka city seismic diagnosis and renovation subsidy project was carried out on a very nice wooden rental building with 26 units. Naturally, the building’s earthquake resistance was not good, and after conducting an earthquake resistance diagnosis and designing it, we finally began seismic retrofitting work. Today, the foundation work to make the earthquake-resistant wall effective is almost completed, and we will confirm the demolition work in preparation for the earthquake-resistant wall construction from next week. Because the building is large in size, was completed a long time ago, and is a residential complex, we have narrowed down the construction areas and are proceeding with earthquake-resistant design and construction. I think there are probably mountains of old buildings, but in order to make those old buildings strong against earthquakes, I would like to continue doing this one step at a time.
